Our Approach

How picks are made, and what we leave out on purpose

FlowMatRise publishes editorial guidance on yoga and Pilates equipment: 60 picks across 6 categories, plus six longer guides on using that equipment well. It is an independent site with no parent retailer, no brand relationships that influence coverage, and no paid placements.

This page explains the method, because a recommendation without a stated method is just an opinion with better typography.

1

Start from the decision, not the product

Every category page begins with the choice a practitioner is actually facing — how thick, how firm, how wide, which level. Products are then arranged as answers to that question. This is why the picks in a category are not ranked by quality alone: a mat that is superb for floor work is a poor answer for someone who mostly balances.

2

State the limitation first

On every pick, the considerations are visible before you expand anything. The reason to hesitate is more useful than the reason to buy, and a page that hides the drawbacks behind a click is optimising for the wrong outcome.

3

No prices

Prices change weekly and any page quoting them is misleading within days. More importantly, a price anchors a decision before the practice does. We describe what a piece of equipment is for; you check the current figure at the retailer.

4

No star ratings

A single score flattens a genuine trade-off into a false hierarchy. A one-inch mat and a three-millimetre mat cannot be compared on one axis, because they are answers to different questions. Each pick carries a stated best use and a stated limitation instead.

5

No sponsored placements

No brand pays to appear here, to rank higher, or to have a drawback softened. If that ever changes it will be disclosed at the top of every affected page, in the same size type as the rest of the article.

6

Corrections are published, not quietly edited

When we change our mind about a pick or find an error, we say so in the monthly letter rather than silently rewriting the page. Equipment advice that never admits a revision is advice that was never examined.

What we do not claim

We do not claim to have tested every product in a laboratory, and we do not describe our work as testing. The picks here are editorial judgements built from manufacturer specifications, material properties, published research on training and safety, the practical demands of each discipline, and the patterns that emerge across a category once you read enough of it.

Where a claim is a matter of physics or clinical guidance — how a band’s tension curve behaves, why anti-burst construction matters, how a stability ball should be sized — we link to a source you can check. Where it is a judgement, we say so and explain the reasoning, so you can disagree with the reasoning rather than just the conclusion.

Nothing on this site is medical advice. If you are practising around an injury, a pregnancy, or a rehabilitation programme, take your guidance from the clinician who knows your case.

How the site is funded

FlowMatRise is reader-supported. When you buy through links on this page we may earn an affiliate commission at no additional cost to you. That commission is the only revenue this site takes. It does not change which products appear, how they are ordered, or which drawbacks are described. The full affiliate disclosure sets out the details.
